The Manuka bush is covered in white flowers for four weeks of the year during mid-summer and the slopes of both mountains and valleys are covered. During these four weeks bees are extremely busy gathering the honey from the Manuka flower. Methylglyoxal forms naturally in the Manuka plant nectar ready for collection by the bees.
Methylglyoxal is the active anti-bacterial compound in Manuka Honey. MGO Manuka Honey is labelled based on the minimum Methylglyoxal content (mg/kg) it contains.
For instance, MGO 400+ Manuka Honey has been tested and is certified to contain at least 400mg/kg of dietary methylglyoxal.
Methylglyoxal is the active compound directly responsible for the antibacterial activity of any Manuka honey and the MGO rating clearly indicates the minimum level of this compound in each jar. No other system of measurement gives such a clear and simple indication. The higher the Methylglyoxal content of MGO Manuka Honey, the stronger the antibacterial activity.
