Perfect for roasting or adding to soups and stews, Ocado Large British Parsnips are fresh root vegetables with a sweet, nutty flavour. Sourced from the UK, they offer versatility in the kitchen.
Ocado Large British Parsnips are firm to the touch with an even, creamy white colour, and can be enjoyed both raw or cooked.
Raw parsnips have a crisp, firm texture, similar to raw carrots. They can be quite fibrous, especially if they are large and mature so opt for younger, smaller parsnips if looking to eat them this way. The earthy notes are more pronounced in raw parsnips and you might also detect a slight peppery or spicy edge. Shredded or thinly sliced can add a crunchy, sweet element to salads. They pair well with other root vegetables, leafy greens, and vinaigrette dressings. Parsnip sticks can be included in vegetable platters alongside other raw vegetables like carrots, celery, and cucumbers, served with dips such as hummus and guacamole. Grated raw parsnips can add a unique twist to coleslaw, providing a sweet and crunchy contrast to the cabbage.
Cooked parsnips have a sweet, slightly nutty flavour and a subtle earthy sweetness, similar to carrots, but more pronounced and with a hint of spice. When roasted, their natural sugars caramelise, intensifying their sweetness and creating a rich, almost honey-like flavour. Roasted parsnips are a classic accompaniment to roast dinners, especially during autumn and winter, as their sweetness complements roasted meats and other root vegetables. Parsnips add depth, sweetness and texture to soups, casseroles and stews. Parsnip purée or mash is a delicious alternative to mashed potatoes as it has a smoother, sweeter flavour.
Parsnips, like carrots, can also be used as an ingredient in muffins, bread, juices and smoothies, adding moisture and a subtle sweetness.
