Unearthed on the Isle of Lewis in 1831, in the wilderness of Scotland's remote Outer Hebrides, the 12th century Lewis chessmen are exquisitely carved in walrus ivory. The British Museum's collection of pieces found in this hoard is one of its most popular attractions and these chessmen have inspired the design of this drinking horn, with pewter serpents taken from the bishop chess piece, coiling around the half-pint glass.
It has been made by Royal Selangor as part of a collaboration with the British Museum and is marked with both partner's logos on its underside.
Pewter is almost maintenance-free as it does not react with the air to oxidise or tarnish. It can attract dust and dirt, but all that's required is an occasional wipe with a soft, damp cloth. Over time and with use, pewter develops a pleasing and subdued patina unique to the metal which is part of the beauty of investing in this material.
