Australian Merlot is often overlooked and sits down the pecking order, living quietly in the shadow of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, just doing its thing. And its thing is to deliver wonderfully juicy, plum-and-red-berry-laden grapes to award-winning winemaker, David King, to transform into one of the most drinkable red wines out there. This Merlot is perfectly ripe, smooth and has a lovely, delicate, spiced edge with notes of plum, blackberry and vanilla.
We started harvest in late January which is earlier than usual but the weather in January was extremely hot which advanced ripening. We had large canopies which gave good protection to the bunches. As much as rain was desperately needed, we were fortunate to harvest at optimum ripeness, with no disease pressure and no stoppages due to rain events.
